INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to move AutoCorrect entries in Microsoft Office Word 2007 from one computer to another computer.

Notes

  • The methods that are discussed in this article overwrite any existing customizations that you may already have saved in Word 2007. After you use these methods, you may have to re-create any existing customizations in Word 2007 that were overwritten. Existing customizations may include the following:

    • AutoCorrect entries

    • AutoText entries

    • Custom styles

    • Macros

  • To use the AutoCorrect feature as you type text in Word 2007, the "Replace text as you type" option must be enabled. To enable the option, follow these steps:

    1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.

    2. Click Proofing.

    3. Click AutoCorrect Options.

    4. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to select the Replace text as you type check box.

    5. Click OK to close the AutoCorrect Options dialog box.

    6. Click OK to close the Word Options dialog box.

Location of AutoCorrect entries

Unformatted AutoCorrect entries in 2007 Microsoft Office programs are stored in an AutoCorrect list (.acl) file. The .acl file for the 2007 Office programs is located in the profile for the user.

Note The default location of the .acl file for the 2007 Office programs is as follows:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\OfficeFormatted AutoCorrect entries in Word 2007 are stored in the default template file for the user. The default template file in Word 2007 is named Normal.dotm.

Note The default location of the Normal.dotm file in Word 2007 is as follows:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

How to move unformatted AutoCorrect entries

To manually move unformatted AutoCorrect entries that are stored in .acl files from one computer to another computer, follow these steps:

  1. Exit all 2007 Office programs on the source computer.

  2. On the source computer, locate the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Office

  3. Select the .acl files. The .acl files will have a name that resembles MSO1033.acl.

    Note The names of .acl files are formatted as follows:

  4. Copy the .acl files to an intermediate location that the destination computer can access.

    Note Some examples of intermediate locations that the destination computer can access include an e-mail account, a floppy disk, a network location, or a CD.

  5. Exit all 2007 Office programs on the destination computer.

  6. On the destination computer, locate the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Office

  7. Copy the .acl files from the intermediate location, and then paste the .acl files to the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Office

  8. Start Word 2007.

The unformatted AutoCorrect entries from the source computer are now on the destination computer.

How to move formatted AutoCorrect entries

To manually move formatted AutoCorrect entries that are stored in the default template file from one computer to another computer, follow these steps:

  1. Exit all 2007 Office programs on the source computer.

  2. On the source computer, locate the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

  3. Copy the Normal.dotm file to an intermediate location that the destination computer can access.

    Note Some examples of intermediate locations that the destination computer can access include an e-mail account, a floppy disk, or a CD.

  4. Exit all 2007 Office programs on the destination computer.

  5. On the destination computer, locate the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

  6. Rename the Normal.dotm file to Normal.bak. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Right-click Normal.dotm, and then click Rename.

    2. Type Normal.bak, and then press ENTER.

  7. Copy the Normal.dotm file from the intermediate location, and then paste the Normal.dotm file to the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

  8. Start Word 2007.

The formatted AutoCorrect entries from the source computer are now on the destination computer. To move your existing styles and macros from the Normal.bak file to the Normal.dotm file, use the Organizer. To open the Organizer, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Developer tab. If the Developer tab does not appear, click the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options, click Popular, click to select the Show the Developer tab in the Ribbon check box, and then click OK.

  2. Click Macros in the Code group.

  3. Click Organizer.

AutoCorrect entries in earlier versions of Microsoft Word

Unformatted AutoCorrect entries in Microsoft Office programs are stored in an AutoCorrect list (.acl) file. The .acl file is located in the profile for the user.

  8. Start and then exit Word 2007.

The formatted AutoCorrect entries from the source computer are now on the destination computer.

Note After you paste the Normal.dot file to the "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates" folder on the destination computer, Word 2007 automatically upgrades the Normal.dot file to a Normal.dotm file. This behavior occurs the first time that you exit Word 2007.

To move your existing styles and macros from the Normal.bak file to the Normal.dotm file, use the Organizer. To open the Organizer, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Developer tab. If the Developer tab does not appear, click the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options, click Popular, click to select the Show the Developer tab in the Ribbon check box, and then click OK.

  2. Click Macros in the Code group.

  3. Click Organizer.
