When you try to use the Define New Multilevel List feature to modify a list in Microsoft Office Word 2007, Word 2007 may stop responding.
When this occurs, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Word 2007 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Additionally, the error report contains an error signature that resembles the following error signature:

Note The application version, the module version, and the offset may vary.

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:
| • | The list that you try to modify is a simple list that was created in Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0. |
| • | The list that you try to modify was created in any version of Microsoft Word. Then, the "Open & Repair" feature was used to fix list damage.
When a damaged list is repaired, a simple list is created. This list exhibits the symptom that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

Note A simple list is a list that contains only one level.
Word 2007 does not support simple lists that were created in Word for Windows 6.0 or in earlier versions of Word for Windows.

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
| 1. | Open the document that was created in Word for Windows 6.0. |
| 2. | Select the simple list. |
| 3. | On the Home tab, click Bullets to remove bulleted list formatting.
Alternatively, click Numbering to remove numbered list formatting. |
| 4. | Click Bullets or Numbering again to reapply list formatting. |
