INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to upgrade a prerelease version of Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 to System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

To successfully upgrade from a prerelease version of System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 SP1 to System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 SP1 and to retain previous data and settings, follow these steps.

Note Before you upgrade to System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 SP1, make sure that all instances of the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console are closed and that no Data Protection Manager jobs are scheduled to run during the upgrade process.
  1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrative credentials.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click to select the Show Updates check box.
  3. In the updates that are listed under Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006, remove all updates except the following publicly released Data Protection Manager hotfixes:
    • KB906881
    • KB907489
    • KB910330
    • KB911169
    • KB917642
  4. Download and then save the DataProtectionManager2006-KB923706.exe file. To obtain the DataProtectionManager2006-KB923706.exe file, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  5. Update the Data Protection Manager file agent on each protected server. For information about how to do this, visit the Data Protection Manager Help page at the following Microsoft Web site:

  6. To perform a synchronization together with a consistency check, synchronize the replica for each protection group member. For information about how to do this, visit the Data Protection Manager Help page at the following Microsoft Web site:

If you do not remove the updates that are mentioned in step 3, the Data Protection Manager SP1 installation stops responding, and you receive the following error message:
Installation failed. Review the error details, take appropriate action, and then run Data Protection Manager Setup again.
When this error occurs, the following error messages are logged in the Application log:
Event ID : 10005
Product: Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006
-- The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2771. The arguments are: DLS, ,
Event ID : 1023
Product: Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 - Update 'Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2006 Update - KB923706' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\..\DPMLogs\DataProtectionManager-KB923706.log.
When you click Review Log File, you receive the following error message:
DEBUG: Error 2771: Upgrade of feature DLS has a missing component.
