How to use the Custom Installation Wizard or the Custom Maintenance Wizard to customize user profiles to load default junk e-mail filter lists in Outlook 2003

This article describes how to use the Custom Installation Wizard or the Custom Maintenance Wizard to customize user profiles to load default junk e-mail filter lists in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003.

All settings for the junk e-mail filter are stored in each user's Outlook profile. Additionally, you can create and deploy initial lists of safe senders, of safe recipients, and of blocked senders to users.

You can use the Custom Installation Wizard or the Custom Maintenance Wizard to configure the Outlook 2003 profile to load these default lists. These wizards are found in the Microsoft Office 2003 Editions Resource Kit (Ork.exe). If you do not have this resource kit, download it from the Microsoft Download Center.

You can override the profile settings by using policies for all options. If the JunkMailImportLists registry entry for the junk e-mail filter lists is configured through a policy, the value will be 1. In this case, the lists are reloaded every time that Outlook is started.

The registry entry may be configured manually, configured by using the Custom Installation Wizard, or configured by using the Custom Maintenance Wizard. In these cases, the filter lists are loaded the first time that Outlook starts after the registry entry is configured. Outlook then resets the registry entry to 0 (zero) so that the lists are not reloaded every time that Outlook starts.

How to create default junk e-mail filter lists to deploy to users

1. In Outlook 2003, click Options on the Tools menu.
2. On the Preferences tab, click Junk Mail.
3. On the Safe Senders tab, click Add.
4. Type an e-mail address or a domain name in the text box. For example, type someone@exchange.example.com.
5. Click OK.
6. To add more e-mail addresses or domain names, repeat steps 3 through 5.
7. Click Export to file.
8. Enter a unique file name for the Safe Senders list, and then click OK.
9. Repeat steps 3 through 8 to create Safe Recipients and Blocked Senders lists. Use the Safe Recipients tab for the Safe Recipients list, and use the Blocked Senders tab for the Blocked Senders list. Make sure that you specify a unique file name for each list.

How to customize an Outlook 2003 profile to load the filter lists by using the Custom Installation Wizard or the Custom Maintenance Wizard

To customize the Outlook 2003 profile to load the filter lists, you can use the Custom Installation Wizard or the Custom Maintenance Wizard. In the Custom Installation Wizard, you must use an .mst (custom transform) file to configure these settings. In the Custom Maintenance Wizard, you must use a .cmw (custom maintenance configuration) file to configure these settings. You must then deploy the transform (.mst file) or the .cmw file to apply the profile to users.

To customize the Outlook profile, follow these steps:

1. In the Custom Installation Wizard or the Custom Maintenance Wizard, click Add on the Add/Remove Files page.
2. Locate and then click the three junk e-mail filter files that you created in the previous procedure. Press the CTRL key or the SHIFT key to select multiple files.
3. Click Add.
4. In the Destination path on the user's computer list, select the location where the files will be installed for users.
5. Click OK.
6. On the Change Office User Settings page, click Junk Mail under Microsoft Office Outlook 2003\Tools\Options\Preferences.
7. In the right pane, double-click Junk Mail Import List, click Apply changes, and then make sure that the Check to turn off import of Junk Mail list check box is cleared.
8. Click OK.
   
   This setting configures the JunkMailImportLists registry entry under the following subkey:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
   Name: JunkMailImportLists
   Value type: REG_DWORD
   Value data: 0 or 1 (A value of 1 imports the list. A value of 0 does not import the list.)
   When you configure the setting by using a policy, the registry entry is included under the following registry subkey:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
9. To overwrite existing junk e-mail filter lists with new lists, double-click Overwrite or Append Junk Mail Import List.
10. Click Apply Changes, and then click to select the Check to overwrite list. Uncheck to append check box.
11. Click OK.
    
    This setting configures the JunkMailImportAppend registry entry under the following subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
    Name: JunkMailImportAppend
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: 0 or 1 (A value of 0 does not append the list. A value of 1 appends the list.)
12. Double-click Specify path to Safe Senders list, and then type a path and a file name in the Specify full path and filename to Safe Senders list box. Repeat this step for the Safe Recipients list and the Blocked Senders list.
    
    This setting configures three registry entries under the following subkey:

13. Configure any other settings that you may require, and then click Finish.

Use the transform (.mst file) that is generated by the Custom Installation Wizard to apply the customization when you install Outlook 2003. Alternatively, use the .cmw file to apply the customization where you want to update Outlook profiles.
