You cannot select the Upgrade option when you try to install Windows Vista, and you receive an error message that is specific to hardware that is installed on your computer

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows Vista on a computer, the Upgrade option is unavailable. You may also receive a message that is specific to the computer hardware.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when one or more pieces of hardware that are attached to the computer are incompatible with Windows Vista.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. If an installation of Windows Vista is in progress, cancel the current Windows Vista installation.
  2. Most applications and devices will run successfully on a computer that is running Windows Vista; however, older hardware and software applications may have compatibility issues. If you have concerns about a particular application or device, visit the Windows Vista Compatibility Center (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-vista/default.aspx) to see specific compatibility information about that product before upgrading. For some software applications you may need to consult the application manufacturer for updates to those applications to make them Windows Vista compatible.
  3. Upgrade or replace any incompatible hardware as indicated on the Windows Vista Compatability Center or by teh manufacturer.
  4. Unplug all optional devices. After Windows Vista is installed, plug these devices in one at a time.
  5. Start the Windows Vista installation.
