A DVD+RW or DVD–RW video disc that was formatted on a Windows Vista-based computer is not recognized by a consumer electronics DVD player

When you format a DVD on a Windows Vista-based computer, a consumer electronics DVD player may not recognize the disc. This problem occurs when you use DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs. DVD-R and DVD+R discs are not affected by this problem.

Note DVD+RW means "digital versatile disc rewritable."

This problem occurs because the version of the Universal Disk Format (UDF) that Windows Vista uses to format DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs is incompatible with the DVD player in question. DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs are affected because Windows Vista sets an Access type that is not recognized by the DVD player.

Note The Access type is set in the Partition Descriptor of the UDF.

To work around this problem, use the consumer electronics DVD player to either format or reformat the disc.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
