The "File Download" dialog box in Internet Explorer 6 closes unexpectedly even after you apply hotfix 896017

In Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, the File Download dialog box may close unexpectedly when you click Save, Open, or Cancel.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

• The computer is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
• The content that you are trying to download contains a frame.
• The content that you are trying to download uses the "content-disposition: attachment" HTTP header.
• The MIME type of the content that you are trying to download is "text/plain".

To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Internet Explorer 6 installed.

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Registry information

After you apply the hotfix, follow these steps to enable the changes that the hotfix makes:

1. Exit Internet Explorer 6.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
   Note If the FeatureControl subkey does not exist, follow these steps to add it:
   1. Right-click Main, point to New, and then click Key.
   2. Type FeatureControl to name the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
4. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.
5. Type FEATURE_PREVENT_CDA_CLOSE_KB928540 to name the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
6. Right-click FEATURE_PREVENT_CDA_CLOSE_KB928540, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
7. Type iexplore.exe to name the new registry entry, and then press ENTER.
8. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
10. Exit Registry Editor.
