INTRODUCTION

MORE INFORMATION

Applying Exchange Service Packs and Hotfixes

To install an Exchange service pack or an Exchange hotfix, follow these steps.

Note Some Exchange service packs and hotfixes require that you download and install an update to make sure that FSE operates correctly. For more information and for downloads, visit the Microsoft Help and Support Web site.

Important These steps may increase your security risk. These steps may also make the computer or the network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We recommend the process that this article describes to enable programs to operate as they are designed to or to implement specific program capabilities. Before you make these changes, we recommend that you evaluate the risks that are associated with implementing this process in your particular environment. If you decide to implement this process, take any appropriate additional steps to help protect the system. We recommend that you use this process only if you really require this process.
  1. Stop all Exchange Server services.
  2. Stop any Forefront Server Security services that might still be running after Exchange has been stopped.
  3. Install the service pack or the software update from Microsoft.

Note If you want to confirm that Exchange is working correctly after the update is applied, you can start Exchange and then verify that all services are working. Then, stop all exchange services. You can do this before you continue to the next step. However, be aware that this step will let mail flow unprotected until Forefront is re-enabled. Therefore, this step is optional.
  4. Start the Forefront Security services.
  5. Start the Exchange services.
