You experience one or both of the following symptoms:
| • | When you connect the Zune device to a computer, the Found
New Hardware wizard appears. If you click Install the software
automatically (Recommended) and then click Next, you
receive the following error message: The software you are
installing for this hardware: Zune has not passed Windows Logo testing to
verify its compatibility with Windows XP |
| • | In Device Manager, a yellow exclamation mark (!) appears on
the icon for the Zune device that is listed under Portable
Devices.

This problem may occur when the Cryptographic Services
service in Microsoft Windows does not verify the digital signature for the
driver.
Note The Zune device driver does contain the correct digital
signature.

The system policy on your computer may be set to warn you
about unsigned driver software during hardware installation. To work around
this issue, click
Continue Anyway in the notification
message.
If the system policy on your computer is set to block
unsigned driver software during hardware installation, you cannot work around
this issue. You may have to resolve the failure of the service that checks for
driver signatures.
To resolve this problem, set the startup for the
Cryptographic Services service to
Automatic. Then try to
install the software again. To set the Cryptographic Services to
Automatic startup, follow these steps:
| 1. | Click Start, click Run,
type services.msc, and then click
OK. |
| 2. | Right-click Cryptographic Services, and
then click Properties. |
| 3. | In the Startup type box, click
Automatic. |
| 4. | If the service is stopped, click Start. If
the service is running, click Stop, and then click
Start again after the service stops. |

You cannot install some updates or programs
After you complete these steps, reconnect your
device to install the software automatically if you are prompted. If the driver
installation has been canceled, you may not be prompted to install it again.
Therefore you may have to manually install the drivers.
To manually
install the drivers, follow these steps:
| 1. | Click Start and then right-click
My Computer. |
| 2. | Click Properties, and then click
Device Manager. |
| 3. | Locate Zune under Portable
Devices.

icon. |
| 4. | Right-click Zune, and then click
Properties. |
| 5. | Click the Driver tab, and then click
Update Driver. |
| 6. | Click Install the software automatically
(Recommended), and then click Next. |
| 7. | After the driver installation is completed, click
Finish. |
If Windows does not find the necessary drivers, follow these
steps to manually locate the drivers:
| 1. | Click Start, and then right-click
My Computer. |
| 2. | Click Properties, and then click
Device Manager. |
| 3. | Locate Zune under Portable
Devices.

icon. |
| 4. | Right-click Zune, and then click
Properties. |
| 5. | Click the Driver tab, and then click
Update Driver. |
| 6. | Click Install from a list or specific location
(Advanced), and then click Next. |
| 7. | Click Don’t search. I will choose the driver to
install, and then click Next. |
| 8. | Click Have Disk, and then click
Browse. |
| 9. | In the Look in box, click Local
Disk (C:). |
| 10. | Double-click Program Files, and then
double-click Zune. |
| 11. | Click Zune, and then click
Open. |
| 12. | Click OK, and then click
Next. |
| 13. | After the driver installation is completed, click
Finish. |
If you still cannot install the drivers, remove and then
reinstall the Zune software. Reconnect the device when you are prompted during
the installation.
If you have administrative credentials on the
computer, you can temporarily change the Driver Signing options to work around
this problem. To do this, follow these steps:
| 1. | Click Start, and then right-click
My Computer. |
| 2. | Click Properties. |
| 3. | Click the Hardware tab, and then click
Driver Signing under Drivers. |
| 4. | Note the current setting, and then click Ignore –
Install the software anyway and don’t ask for my approval. |
| 5. | Connect the Zune device. Choose to install the software
automatically when you are prompted. |
| 6. | After the installation is complete, repeat steps 1-4 to
change back to the setting that you noted in step 4. |
