TCP/IPv4 appears to be enabled even when it is disabled in Windows Vista

SYMPTOMS

In the properties dialog box for a network adapter, the TCP/IP Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) protocol appears to be enabled even when it is disabled. The Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) check box is selected.

CAUSE

This problem may occur after you use the Netsh.exe command-line tool to disable TCP/IPv4 on the network adapter.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the Netsh.exe tool to view the status of the network adapter

To use the Netsh.exe tool to view the status of the network adapter, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start

    , type command in the Search box, and then click Command Prompt under Programs.
  2. Type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
    Netsh interface IPV4 show interfaces
    .

Method 2: Disable TCP/IPv4 by using the network adapter properties dialog box instead of the Netsh.exe tool

To disable TCP/IPv4 in the network adapter properties dialog box, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start

    Start button
    , type network and sharing center in the Search box, and then click Network and Sharing Center under Programs.
  2. Click View status next to the network adapter that you want to modify.
  3. On the Networking tab, click to clear the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) check box.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not affect the behavior of TCP/IPv4. Only the network adapter properties dialog box is affected.
