Error message occurs when you repair, update, or start an Office 2003 program: "Error 2908. An internal error has occurred"

SYMPTOMS

You receive the following error message in one of the Microsoft Office 2003 programs that are listed in the "Applies to" section:
Error 2908. An internal error has occurred
You receive this error message when you perform any one of the following tasks:
  • Repair an Office 2003 program
  • Install a software update
  • Start an Office 2003 program

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • If you are running Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or a later version, repair the installation. For more information about how to repair the .NET Framework, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
