Exchange Server 2007 cannot run simultaneous VSS-based backup and restore operations on Exchange databases in Windows Server 2003

On a server that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 cannot run simultaneous Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)-based backup and VSS-based restoration on Exchange databases. For example, Exchange Server 2007 supports up to 50 databases. When a database is being restored, other databases cannot be backed up or restored.

Note Exchange Server supports two types of backup and of restoration. This issue applies only to the VSS-based backup and to the VSS-based restoration. This issue does not apply to the traditional Exchange database backup or to the traditional Exchange database restoration that does not use VSS.

This issue occurs because the VSS framework has a limitation. The VSS framework disallows backup and restore to run at the same time.

Important This hotfix alone does not fully resolve the current issue. This is true because the hotfix is only for Windows Server 2003. For Exchange Server 2007, this issue will be addressed in Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1. The current hotfix enables a single VSS-based restoration to run together with multiple VSS-based backups at the same time.
