When you create a network connection that automatically calls another connection in Windows Vista, incorrect credentials appear when Windows Vista tests the connection.

Note This kind of connection is known as a double-dial connection. For more information about this kind of connection, see the "More Information" section.

When Windows Vista tests the connection, incorrect credentials appear in the User name box and Password box of the network connection on which the double-dial connection depends.

You expect the credentials that you saved for the initial network connection or for the Internet connection to appear in the User name box and Password box of the initial network connection or of the Internet connection. However, the credentials that you configured for the double-dial connection, such as for a virtual private network (VPN) connection, appear instead.

To work around this problem, skip the Windows Vista connection test. To do this, follow these steps.

Note You only experience this problem when Windows Vista tests the double-dial connection. This connection test occurs when you create the VPN connection or the dial-up networking connection. After you enter the IP address or host name of the destination server and then click Next, you enter the account credentials to connect to the remote network and then click Connect. Then, Windows Vista starts a connection test. After several moments, the Skip button and the Cancel button appear. If you click Skip, the following buttons appear:

• Try again
• Diagnose the problem
• Set up the connection anyway

1. In the Connect to a workplace dialog box, click Set up the connection anyway.
2. Click Start

   , right-click Network, and then click Properties.
3. In the Tasks pane, click Connect to a network.
4. In the Connect to a network dialog box, click the network connection, and then click Connect. For example, click the VPN connection that uses the dial-up connection to connect to a workplace.
5. If you are prompted to use the dial-up connection to connect to the remote network, click Yes. The correct dial-up network credentials appear in the Connect Initial Connection Name dialog box.

A double-dial connection is a network connection that depends on another network connection. You may have to create a double-dial connection if the following conditions are true:

• You use a dial-up connection to connect to the Internet.
• You have to create a VPN connection to connect to a remote network over the Internet.

In this scenario, you must first create a dial-up connection to the Internet. Then, you create a VPN connection to the remote network. This VPN connection depends on the dial-up connection to establish a connection to the Internet before the VPN connection can establish an encrypted channel to the remote network.

This problem occurs only when you first test a network connection that depends on another network connection or on an Internet connection. When you later use the double-dial connection, the correct user name and password appear in the Connect Dial-up Connection Name dialog box of the initial network connection or of the Internet connection.
