SYMPTOMS

You use the File Sharing Wizard in Windows Vista to share a folder, and then grant Contributor permissions to a user for that folder. However, when the user tries to access the folder, the following problems may occur:
  • The user cannot locate the folder.
  • The user can delete files or folders that have been created by other users.

CAUSE

The user may be unable to locate the shared folder if the following conditions are true:
  • You share a folder that resides in your profile path on the Windows Vista-based computer. For example, you share the following folder:
    drive:\Users\UserName\SharedFolder
Note UserName is your profile name. SharedFolder is the name of the shared folder.

In this case, a user who has Contributor permissions must know the full path of the shared folder before the user can view the shared folder. For example, a user must have the following information:
    \\ComputerName\Users\UserName\SharedFolder
Note ComputerName is the name of the Windows Vista-based computer.
  • You share a folder that does not reside in your profile path on the Windows Vista-based computer. For example, you share the following folder:
    drive:\SharedFolder
In this case, a user who has Contributor permissions only has to know the computer name to view the shared folder.
In both these cases, a user who has Contributor permissions can delete files and folders that other users have created.

Note Contributor permissions are only available when you share a folder. Contributor permissions do not appear when you share files.
