SYMPTOMS

In Windows Vista, a gadget that you downloaded from the Internet is not installed correctly. Additionally, the gadget does not appear in the Windows Sidebar as expected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the .gadget file name extension is not correctly associated with the Windows Sidebar program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, associate the .gadget file name extension with the Windows Sidebar program. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Default Programs item in Control Panel. To do this, click Start

    , type default programs in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  3. Under Name, click .gadget, and then click Change program.
  4. Use one of the following methods:
    • Under Recommended Programs, click Windows Sidebar, and then click OK.
    • Click Browse, double-click Windows Sidebar, click sidebar, click Open, and then click OK.
