Symptomen

After you install Microsoft Windows Live OneCare, you experience the following issues:
  • You cannot access other computers on your network by using Remote Desktop.
  • Other computers on your network cannot access the computer that has OneCare installed by using Remote Desktop.
  • You can no longer access your computer from a remote location outside your local network.

Oorzaak

These issues occur because after you install Windows Live OneCare, Remote Desktop is configured to only allow connections from your local subnet. Windows Live OneCare restricts Remote Desktop to help increase the overall security of the computer. Remote Desktop sharing should only be enabled as needed. And it should be configured to allow the minimum amount of access that is required to perform the required task. Set the access to "subnet" instead of "Internet" whenever you can do this.

Oplossing

To modify the default behavior of Remote Desktop, follow these steps:
  1. In the notification area, right-click the Windows Live OneCare icon, and then click Open Windows Live OneCare.
  2. In the left Navigation Pane, click View or Change Settings, and then click the Firewall tab.
  3. Click Advanced Settings, and then click the Sharing tab.
  4. Under Remote Desktop, click Only computers on my local network (subnet), if you are using Remote Desktop within your local network, or click Share them with all computers, including those on the Internet, if you need a connection from outside your local network, such as from a work computer or from a computer in another location.

Meer informatie

Consider the following scenario:
  • The network contains multiple routers. For example, the network contains a wireless router and a wired router.
  • You cannot share files between computers that are connected to the individual routers. For example, you cannot share folders from wireless computers to wired computers that are connected through different routers.
In this scenario, you may have to configure file and printer sharing and select the Share them with all computers, even those on the Internet option. This is because Windows Live OneCare will not recognize that computers that are connected to a wireless router are on the same subnet as the computers that are connected to a wired router.

This behavior is not a deficiency of Windows Live OneCare. It is a limitation that is caused by the way routers and subnets generally function. In these scenarios, if your network contains a router that is managing the connection to a cable modem or a digital subscriber line (DSL) modem, file and printer sharing is usually blocked at the hardware router. This behavior reduces the security risk of this configuration.
