A truncated or changed version of the original file name appears in the "Save As" dialog box in Windows Internet Explorer 7

In Windows Internet Explorer 7, you click a file. Then, on the File menu, you click Save As. When you do this, a truncated or changed version of the original file name appears in the Save As dialog box.

You experience this problem if the name of the file that you want to save contains characters from a multibyte character set (MBCS).

Note You also experience this problem when you right-click the file and then click Save Target As.

This problem occurs because Windows Internet Explorer 7 incorrectly handles MBCS characters and %-escaped characters.

To resolve this problem, install the hotfix version of the files that are in the latest cumulative security update for Windows Internet Explorer 7. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

After you install the software update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 928090, %-escaped characters may still appear at the beginning of a file name when you use the Save As functionality in Windows Internet Explorer 7.
