Error message when you try to repair or recover Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Home Premium by using Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore: "You do not have a valid backup image to restore from"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to repair or recover Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Home Premium by using Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
You do not have a valid backup image to restore from.
Additionally, you are asked to provide the location of a valid backup image.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore cannot find a valid backup image that was created by Windows Complete PC Backup.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore is only available in the following editions of Windows Vista:
  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Windows Vista Enterprise
If you are running an edition of Windows Vista that is listed in the "Applies to" section, a valid Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore image may not exist for your computer.
