The Windows Process Activation Service feature is not turned off when you turn off the IIS 7.0 feature

SYMPTOMS

When you turn off the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 feature on a Windows Vista-based computer, the Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) feature is not turned off.

Note When you turn on the IIS 7.0 feature on a Windows Vista-based computer, WAS is turned on automatically.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, manually turn off WAS. To do this, follow these steps.

Note You should turn off WAS unless programs that are installed on the computer depend on WAS. Therefore, before you turn off WAS, verify that other programs that are installed on the computer do not depend on the functionality that is provided by WAS.
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Programs and Features.
  3. Click Turn Windows features on or off.

    Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  4. Click to clear the Windows Process Activation Service check box, and then click OK.
  5. Click Restart Now to restart the computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

REFERENCES

In IIS 7.0, WAS manages application pool configuration and worker processes. In earlier versions of IIS, the WWW service managed these functions. This change in IIS 7.0 lets you use the same configuration and process model for both HTTP and non-HTTP sites.
