Library behavior when you use your Xbox 360 console as a Media Center Extender

This article summarizes library behavior when you use your Xbox 360 console as a Media Center Extender.

Windows Vista

When you set up your Xbox 360 console as a Media Center Extender by using Windows Vista, the Media Center Extender will examine the library locations of the user profile that is used to set up your Media Center Extender. By default, those locations are as follows:

• C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV
• C:\Users\Public\Music
• C:\Users\Public\Pictures
• C:\Users\Public\Videos
• C:\Users\USER PROFILE\Music
• C:\Users\USER PROFILE\Pictures
• C:\Users\USER PROFILE\Videos

During setup, the Media Center Extender software scans the directories of the Media Center computer and adds all audio, videos, and pictures to the appropriate Music, TV + Movies, and Pictures + Videos sections of the Media Center Extender based on the file type. If you add files to those directories in the future, the files will automatically be reflected in the Media Center Extender library. However, if you stop monitoring those directories, that content will not be removed automatically.

To remove content from previously monitored directories, you must delete the existing Media Center connection data and rerun Media Center Extender setup. Windows XP

When you set up your Xbox 360 console as a Media Center Extender by using Windows XP, the Media Center Extender will examine the library locations of the user profile that is used to set up your Media Center Extender. By default, those locations are as follows:

• C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV
• C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music
• C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures
• C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Video
• C:\Documents and Settings\USER PROFILE\Documents\My Music
• C:\Documents and Settings\USER PROFILE\Documents\My Pictures
• C:\Documents and Settings\USER PROFILE\Documents\My Videos

The My Music, My Pictures, and My Video sections of the Media Center Extender interface will reflect the content that is located in those folders. If you add files to those folders, the files will automatically be reflected in the Media Center Extender library. However, if you stop monitoring those folders, that content will not be automatically removed from the Media Center Extender library.

To remove content from previously monitored folders, you must delete the existing Media Center connection data and rerun Media Center Extender setup with those folders excluded. After setup, you can add folders by using library setup on the Extender. For a Media Center Extender to access content in the media folders that are located on a Media Center computer or on a network share, the Extender must have the appropriate permissions to access the content. In some cases, you must manually set the permissions for the Media Center Extender account. By default, the Extender account is named "MCX1." If more than one Extender is connected, this name may change to MCX2, MCX3, and so on.

For the Extender to use this media, the Extender account must have the following permissions for the content:

• Read
• Read & Execute
• List Folder Contents
