Description of the Microsoft Windows registry SYMPTOMSAfter you enable the "Systems Management Server Advanced Client Updates" option in the Sms_def.mof file in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, you receive the following error in the InventoryAgent.log file on the SMS Advanced Client: Unknown error encountered processing an instance of class Win32Reg_AdvCliUpdates: 80041001 CAUSEThis behavior occurs because the "SMS Advanced Client Updates" option is used to locate SMS 2003 client updates. When you install a software update on the SMS Advanced Client, the following registry subkey is created: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Updates\SMS Advanced Client\UpdateVersion In this subkey, the UpdateVersion placeholder represents the software update build number. By default, this registry subkey is not created when you install the original release version of the SMS Advanced Client. This registry subkey is only created when you install a software update or a service pack. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation. Method 1Install the latest SMS 2003 Advanced Client software update or service pack.Method 2Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.Create the required registry subkey. To create the registry subkey, follow these steps:
