SYMPTOMS

If you plug in certain flash memory devices while you use Microsoft Windows Media Player 11 in Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Media Player may crash.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because certain flash memory devices have noncompliant descriptor layouts. When WMDM (Windows Media Device Manager) tries to read the manufacturer name from the memory device, a memory access violation occurs. Because WMDM runs as a part of Windows Media Player, the memory access violation causes Windows Media Player to crash.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Manufacturers who create memory devices should make sure that they follow the Windows Driver Kit documentation for the STORAGE_DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR data structure. The values for the VendorIdOffset member, the ProductIdOffset member, the ProductRevisionOffset member, and the SerialNumberOffset member are supposed to be a byte offset into the block of memory that is returned by using the IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY request. If the item is not present, the value for the following three members is 0:
  • VendorIdOffset
  • ProductIdOffset
  • ProductRevisionOffset
However, the value for the SerialNumberOffset member is -1.
