FIX: Error message when the Replication Merge Agent runs to synchronize a merge replication subscription in SQL Server 2005: “The merge process failed to execute a query because the query timed out”

SYMPTOMS When the Replication Merge Agent runs to synchronize a merge replication subscription in Microsoft SQL Server 2005, you receive the following error messages in the Replication Merge Agent log file: Date Time [9%] [93 sec remaining] Beginning evaluating partial replication filters
Date Time [9%] [93 sec remaining] The merge process failed to execute a query because the query timed out. If this failure continues, increase the query timeout for the process. When troubleshooting, restart the synchronization with verbose history logging and specify an output file to which to write. CAUSEThis issue occurs because queries time out when the Replication Merge Agent runs the queries to synchronize the merge replication subscription. The Replication Merge Agent queries time out because the plan that is chosen for execution of these queries is inefficient. The plan decision is affected by the cardinality estimation of a built-in function. Replication uses the built-in function to perform permission checks. RESOLUTIONCumulative update informationTo resolve this problem, obtain the cumulative update package (build 3173) for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
