Error in Windows Media Player 11 when you click an "mms://" link: "Windows Media Player cannot find the file"

SYMPTOMS

When you click an mms:// link to listen to streaming audio using Microsoft Windows Media Player 11, you receive the following error message:
Windows Media Player cannot find the file.

CAUSE

Windows Media Player 11 no longer supports the Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol.

WORKAROUND

Contact the provider of the streaming content for additional playback options or formats.
