SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a ClickOnce application from a Web server, installation fails. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
URLDownloadToCacheFile failed with HRESULT '-2146697202' Error: An error occurred trying to download <file>
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • In Microsoft Internet Explorer, the Warn if changing between secure and not secure mode advanced security option is enabled.
  • The setup URL of the ClickOnce application is redirected between a nonsecure (http) Web server and a secure (https) Web server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the warning pop-up window interrupts the installation of the ClickOnce application. The Bootstrapper of the ClickOnce application determines whether the program file is available at the specified Web server. When the Warn if changing between secure and not secure mode option is enabled, the Bootstrapper cannot handle the redirection between a nonsecure (http) Web server and a secure (https) Web server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • In Internet Explorer, disable the Warn if changing between secure and not secure mode option.
  • Make sure that the setup URL is not redirected between nonsecure (http) mode and secure (https) mode.
  • Do not redirect the setup URL. Directly use the actual setup URL.
