Error message when you try to burn files to a writable disc in Windows Vista: "There was an error burning this disc"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to burn files to a writable CD disc or to a writable DVD disc in Windows Vista, you receive the following error message:
There was a problem burning this disc.
There was an error burning this disc. The disc might no longer be usable.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • A file has a dollar sign ($) character in the file name extension.
  • You are using the Mastered disc format to burn the files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, rename the file name extension of the file.
