Error message when you try to burn files to a writable disc in Windows Vista: "There was an error burning this disc"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to burn files to a writable CD disc or to a writable DVD disc in Windows Vista, you receive the following error message:
There was a problem burning this disc.
There was an error burning this disc. The disc might no longer be usable.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the following conditions are true:
A file has a dollar sign ($) character in the file name extension.
You are using the Mastered disc format to burn the files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, rename the file name extension of the file.
