SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you cannot install updates that you download from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service is stopped.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, restart the BITS service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the list of services, double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
  3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Start.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  5. Restart the computer.
