Error message when you open a company in Accounting Express and in Accounting Professional: "The current version of the accounting software does not support this operation"

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Accounting Express and in Microsoft Office Accounting Professional, when you click Open Company on the File menu to open a company, you may receive the following error message:
The current version of the accounting software does not support this operation.
Note In Accounting Express and in Accounting Professional, a company is saved as an .sbc file.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:
  • The computer name that is associated with the .sbc file of the company is incorrect.
  • You changed the name of the computer that you are using.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, rebuild the company file in Accounting Express and in Accounting Professional. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Use the appropriate method:
    • In Accounting Express, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Accounting Tools, and then click Data Tools.
  2. In the Microsoft Office Accounting Data Utilities dialog box, click Rebuild.
  3. In the Rebuild Company File dialog box, select the name of the company file that you want to rebuild.
  4. Click Rebuild.
  5. In the Select Company File dialog box, type a new company file name in the File name box, and then click Save.
  6. Click OK.
  7. In the Rebuild Company File dialog box, click Close.
  8. In the Microsoft Office Accounting Data Utilities dialog box, click Close.
  9. Start Accounting Express, and then open the company file.

To determine the computer name that is associated with the .sbc file of a company, follow these steps:
  1. Open the following folder:
    Drive:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\Small Business Accounting\Companies
    Note In this path, Drive is the name of the drive that you are using. And, UserName is the user name that you use on the computer.
  2. Right-click the .sbc file for which you want to determine the computer name, click Open With, and then click Choose Program.
  3. Click Notepad. Or, click WordPad.
  4. Review the second line in the file. This line contains the computer name that is associated with the .sbc file of the company. For example, you see the following text in the second line:
    server=computer_name\MSSMLBIZ, 5356
To determine the computer name of the computer that you are using, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Computer Name tab.
  3. Review the computer name that appears. For example, you may see the following text:
    Full computer name: Computer_name
    If you are on a domain network, the full computer name appears in the following format:
    Computer_name.Subdomain_name.corp.Domain_name.com
