You cannot export a contact item to the Address Book in Windows XP from Windows Contacts in Windows Vista by using the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard

You try to export a contact item to a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer from Windows Contacts in Windows Vista by using the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard. However, you cannot open the contact item by using Address Book in Windows XP.

For example, this problem occurs in the following scenario. You right-click a contact item from Windows Contacts in Windows Vista, and then you send it to a Bluetooth enabled device. Then, you receive the file on a Bluetooth enabled computer that is running Windows XP. In this scenario, the contact item does not open in Address Book.

This problem occurs because the contact item is sent by using an XML format that is not supported by Address Book in Windows XP.

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Export the contact item to vCard format

Export the contact item to vCard format (.vcf), and then send it by using the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard. To do this, follow these steps:

1. In Windows Contacts, click Export.
2. In the Export Windows Contacts window, click vCards (folder of .vcf files), and then click Export.
3. Select a folder where you want to export the contacts, click OK, and then click Close.
   
   Note All contact items in Windows Contacts are exported in vCard (.vcf) format to the specified folder.
4. Open the folder where you exported the vCard files.
5. Right-click the contact that you want to export, click Send To, and then click Bluetooth Device.
6. Follow the steps in the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard to send the vCard file to the Bluetooth enabled computer that is running Windows XP.
7. The contact opens in Address Book.

Method 2: Export the contact item to CSV format

On the Windows Vista-based computer, export the contact item by using the CSV format (Comma Separated Values) option, and then send the contact item by using the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard. On the Windows XP-based computer, import the CSV file in Address Book. To do this, follow these steps.

On the Windows Vista-based computer

1. In Windows Contacts, click Export.
2. In the Export Windows Contacts window, click CSV (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.
3. Click Browse to select a folder where you want to export the contacts, type the name to use for the CSV file, such as Eported.csv, and then click Save.
4. Click Next, and then click Finish. Click OK, and then click Close.
   
   Note All contact items in Windows Contacts are exported to a CSV file in the specified folder.
5. Open the folder where you exported the CSV file.
6. Right-click the CSV file, click Send To, and then click Bluetooth Device.
7. Follow the steps in the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard to send the CSV file to the Bluetooth device of your choice, and then copy the file to a folder on the Windows XP-based computer.

On the Windows XP-based computer

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Address Book.
2. In Address Book, click the File menu, point to Import, and then click Other address book.
3. Click Text file (Comma Separated Values), and then click Import.
4. Type the location of the CSV file in the Choose a file to import box, and then click Next.
5. Click Finish.
   
   Note The settings in the Change Mapping dialog box should work correctly unless you have previously changed the default mapping. You may want to click Change Mapping to verify or to edit the default mapping of the fields in the Change Mapping dialog box before you click Finish.
