SYMPTOMS

A handle leak occurs in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 when an application frequently maps shared drives and unmaps shared drives. When this problem occurs, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The performance log indicates that the handle count for the Csrss.exe process is very high. The handle count may reach from 10,000 through 40,000.
  • Over time, the paged pool resources of the system are exhausted.
  • The system stops responding.
  • All applications and services that are running stop working.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the allocated handles are not completely detached when threads that are running in the Csrss.exe process exit. Therefore, the handle count of the Csrss.exe process continues to increase.

RESOLUTION
