Error message after you change the content database name when you perform a gradual upgrade from SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to SharePoint Server 2007: "An update conflict has occurred"

SYMPTOMS

You perform a gradual upgrade from Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to the release version of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. However, when you manually specify a database name, you receive the following error message:

An update conflict has occurred, and you must re-try this action.
The object SPWebApplication Name=WebSiteName_Pair Parent=SPWebService is being updated by Domain\Account, in the OWSTIMER process, on machine ComputerName.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:

You manually specify the database name on the database name page.
You replace the default _Pair name with a custom name.

When you try to save the changes to the database name, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

Use the "SharePoint Products and Technologies Wizard" to disconnect SharePoint Server 2007 from the configuration database.
Restart the "SharePoint Products and Technologies Wizard."

Important Make sure that you do not change the _Pair part of the database name when you specify the database name.
Start the upgrade. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
2. On the Central Administration Web page, click Operations.
3. On the Operations page, click Site Content Upgrade Status, and then click Begin Upgrade.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

On a computer that is running SharePoint Portal Server 2003, install SharePoint Server 2007 by using the gradual upgrade method.
Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
On the Central Administration page, click Operations.
On the Operations page, click Site Content Upgrade Status, click Begin Upgrade, and then click Manual database name selection.
When you are prompted to provide a database name, replace the default _Pair database name with Test, and then click Save.
