Article ID: 936836 - Last Review: May 22, 2007 - Revision: 1.1 All dynamic disk volumes are removed and then re-created when you restore a computer by using Complete PC Restore together with the "Format and repartition disks" option in Windows VistaSYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario. You restore a computer by using the Windows Complete PC Restore program in Windows Vista. You use the Format and repartition disks option. In this scenario, all dynamic disk volumes are removed and then re-created. This behavior occurs even if the dynamic disk volumes are not included in the restore process. CAUSEThis behavior occurs because Automated System Recovery (ASR) restores the disk volume configuration to match the disk volume configuration that was included in the backup set. When you use the Format and repartition disks option, ASR removes and then re-creates disk volumes.
Note ASR does not remove or re-create GUID partition tables (GPT) disk volumes or basic disk volumes.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this behavior, do not use the Format and repartition disks option if the disk volumes have not changed since the Windows Complete PC Backup image was created. If a hard disk was replaced, and the volume information needs be restored, disconnect any dynamic disks that you do not want to be included in the restore process before you start the restore process. Then, restore the computer by using Complete PC Restore. Select the Format and repartition disks option. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. | Article Translations
