SUMMARY

This article describes how to use the Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit to move content from an Xbox 360 hard drive to another Xbox 360 console.

Note A new version of the Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit will be available in September 2011. The new transfer kit can transfer content between any two Xbox 360 Hard Drives. The previous version of the transfer kit can’t transfer content between two Xbox 360 S Hard Drives.

MORE INFORMATION

To move content to another console, you need the following items:
  • An Xbox 360 console with a hard drive (to move the content to)
  • An Xbox 360 Hard Drive (to move the content from)
  • Data transfer cable (included with the Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit)

If you do not have an Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit, please see read the following article to learn how to order it:
976183  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976183/ ) Description of the Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit
The Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit moves all content from one console to another. If you only need to move a small amount of content (for example, your saved games), you can move that by using a USB storage device. For information about how to copy or move content in this way, please see:
906942  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906942/ ) How to copy, move, or delete content from an Xbox 360 storage device

Things to know before you transfer content

Warning Before you use the Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit, please read the user's guide included with the kit.

You can move all content from one Xbox 360 Hard Drive (referred to as the "source hard drive") to another Xbox 360 Hard Drive (referred to as the "destination hard drive"). The content from the source hard drive overwrites the content on the destination hard drive.

Once the transfer is complete, the original content on the destination hard drive is replaced with all the content from the source hard drive and the content on the source hard drive is erased.

Movie rentals

Movies you have rented on the source hard drive will not be available after the transfer. Make sure to watch all Zune movie rentals before you use the Hard Drive Transfer Kit.

Using the Hard Drive Transfer Kit

Warning With any transfer, there is a slight risk that some or all of your content might be lost during the process. Microsoft is not liable for any loss of content that results from the transfer process.

Only one hard drive can be connected to your Xbox 360 console at a time. The transfer cable cannot be used to connect multiple hard drives to your console at the same time.

To transfer all hard drive content to another console
  1. Remove the hard drive from your old Xbox 360 console (the source hard drive). For information on how to do this, please see the following articles:
906204  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906204/ ) How to attach or remove your Xbox 360 hard drive

  2. Connect the transfer cable to the hard drive and plug the other end of the transfer cable into a USB port on the destination console (as shown below).

When both ends of the cable are connected, you're ready to transfer content.

Note If this message does not appear, sign in to Xbox LIVE to get the latest console software. For information on how to update your console software please see the following article:

  4. Select Start to begin transferring content.

Click Start to begin the transfer

The transfer might take several hours to complete, depending on the amount of content stored on your old hard drive. Once the transfer is complete, sign in to Xbox LIVE on the destination console.

Note If the Start button is not available, you will need to free space on the destination drive before you can start the transfer.

Content licenses

After your content is transferred to the new console, some content might still be associated with your old Xbox 360 console. Don't worry, you'll still be able to play the content on your new console as long as you are signed in to Xbox LIVE using the gamertag that you were using when you originally purchased the content.

However, if you want to use all of your transferred content without signing in to Xbox LIVE or when you are signed in with a different gamertag, you need to transfer the content licenses to your new console. For information on how to do this, please go to www.xbox.com/drm (http://www.xbox.com/drm) .

Notes
  • The cable included with the Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit is not a personal computer (PC) accessory. The cable is intended to connect an Xbox 360 hard drive to another Xbox 360 console for transfer purposes only. Damage might occur if you connect the transfer cable to other devices. The cable only works with the Xbox 360 transfer software.
  • The Xbox Dashboard is not available during the content transfer.
  • If the transfer is interrupted for any reason, your content will remain on the source hard drive. You can restart the transfer process at any time until the process is complete.
