FIX: Error message when you use a smart card CSP together with the "RSACryptoServiceProvider.SignData" method in the .NET Framework 2.0

When you use a smart card Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) together with the RSACryptoServiceProvider.SignData method in the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, you may receive the following error message:This problem occurs if the CSP encapsulates the Microsoft Enhanced CSP to support the smart card. For example, if you use the Schlumberger CSP that is included in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 together with the RSACryptoServiceProvider.SignData method, this problem occurs.

This problem occurs because of a conflict between the CSP and the .NET Framework 2.0 that occurs when the size of the CSP-generated hash is being verified.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.
