When using your Xbox 360 console with an HDMI cable, the display quality is poor, distorted, or discolored

Expand all | Collapse all

SUMMARY

When you use an HDMI cable to connect your Xbox 360 to your HDTV or monitor, you experience one of the following display issues:
  • A green or purple tint to the video
  • Extensive flickering for more than several seconds when you play video, use the Xbox Guide, or switch from the Dashboard to a movie
  • Image “ghosting"
Although the video problem occurs, the sound is typically not affected.

MORE INFORMATION

To resolve this problem, try the following methods:
  • Connect your Xbox 360 console to the Internet to obtain any available automatic Dashboard updates from the Xbox LIVE service.
Note Either an Xbox LIVE Silver account or an Xbox LIVE Gold account can be used.
  • Adjust the HDMI display settings in the Dashboard. Specifically, set the HDTV setting to Optimal Resolution. Also, try all three settings under Reference Levels. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • Connect the HDMI cable from your Xbox 360 HDMI port directly to the HDMI port on the HDTV. Do not install any other device between the Xbox 360 console and the HDTV.
  • Change channels or inputs on the HDTV.

Note The Dashboard or a particular game may require a display change for specific video content. The HDTV may have problems automatically adjusting to this display change.
  • Unplug the HDMI cable from the back of the port on the HDTV. Then, plug in the cable again.
  • On the HDTV, make sure that you connect the HDMI cable to an HDMI port and not to a DVI port. DVI ports do not support some features of HDMI. A connection to a DVI port may cause display problems.
  • If your HDTV has an image-enhancement feature or any kind of digital noise-reduction feature, turn this feature off.
  • Use another method to connect to the HDTV. For example, use your Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable or your Xbox 360 VGA AV Cable.
