SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In a Microsoft Host Integration Server 2006 environment, you apply the fixes for KB article 934213 and KB article 934214.
  • You set the TerminateIfNoSponsors registry entry to 0x0.
In this scenario, the Host Integration Server client reestablishes the sponsor connection after the sponsor connection has timed out for 30 seconds. Additionally, a new sponsor request is performed when the Host Integration Server client tries to establish a connection.

Note The Host Integration Server client should close its sponsor connection when the On Demand sponsor connection exceeds its time-out limit of 300 seconds.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The TerminateIfNoSponsors registry entry that is referred to in the "Symptoms" section is as follows:
/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/SnaBase/Parameters/

Value Name: TerminateIfNoSponsors
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0x0
To reproduce this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Install the fixes for KB article 934213 and KB article 934214 on a Host Integration Server 2006 client that has no other hotfixes.
  2. Set the TerminateIfNoSponsors registry value to 0x0.
  3. Disconnect the Host Integration Server 2006 sponsor server from the network.
  4. Start a 3270 client on the Host Integration Server 2006 client.

The sponsor connection fails because the sponsor server is unavailable. However, the SnaBase process stays running and the Notification Area icon indicates that the connection is down.
  5. Plug the sponsor server back into the network.

The SnaBase process on the client can connect to the sponsor server. Then, a 3270 session is established.
  6. Wait for 5+ minutes.
After you do this, the sponsor connection is dropped after 5 minutes as expected. However, the sponsor connection is unexpectedly reestablished almost immediately .
