An unrecognized HTTP status was received. Check that the address can be accessed using Internet Explorer.
(HttpStatusCode Service Unavailable.
The request failed with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable).

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • A proxy server is not configured for the Office SharePoint Server Search service in SharePoint Server 2007.
  • A proxy server is configured in Windows Internet Explorer.
In this situation, the Internet Explorer proxy settings for the account that is configured as the default content access account are used to crawl content.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the proxy settings that are configured in Internet Explorer on the server that hosts the Shared Service Provider (SSP), and then restart the Office SharePoint Server Search service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the server by using the user account under which the SSP is configured to run.
  2. Remove the proxy settings in Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Internet Explorer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    3. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.
    4. Under Proxy server, click to clear the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) check box, and then click OK two times.
  3. Restart the Office SharePoint Server Search service. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. In the list of services, right-click Office SharePoint Server Search, and then click Restart.
