SYMPTOMS

When you run a Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 Web application that is built on the .Microsoft NET Framework 2.0, the value of the # Induced GC performance counter increases very quickly. Additionally, CPU usage becomes high, and the computer performance decreases.

Note You can view the # Induced GC performance counter in the Performance Monitor counters. The value of the counter increases for every call that is sent to the GC.Collect method.

CAUSE

The issue occurs because of a problem in the method that ASP.NET uses to scavenge the cache objects. The problem causes insufficient memory to be reclaimed on each call to the GC.Collect method. The excessive calls to the GC.Collect method cause high CPU usage.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

ASP.NET scavenges cache items when memory is low. For more information about ASP.NET caching, visit the following Web site:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178597.aspx
This hotfix changes the method that ASP.NET uses to scavenge the cache objects so that fewer calls are sent to the GC.Collect method.

The hotfix for the .NET Framework 2.0 x64 and for the .NET Framework 2.0 IA-64 changes the files in the Framework folder for x86-based versions on these two platforms. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
