Expression Design stops responding (hangs) when you try to open an Adobe Illustrator file that contains a mesh gradient

SYMPTOMS

You try to open an Adobe Illustrator file that contains a mesh gradient in Microsoft Expression Design on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Microsoft Windows XP. When you do this, Expression Design stops responding (hangs).

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the mesh gradient is not supported in Expression Design. Expression Design converts the mesh gradient into thousands of shapes. These shapes take a long time to be displayed in Windows Vista. They cannot be displayed in Windows XP.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue in Windows Vista, wait for the file to open. This process may take six to ten minutes, depending on the size of the file.

In Windows XP, there is no workaround.
