Error result when you run the Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 3 Deployment Readiness Wizard: "Site Database SQL version less than 7.0 SP3"

SYMPTOMS

You decide to upgrade a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site server to SMS 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3). You run the SMS 2003 SP3 Deployment Readiness Wizard to determine whether SMS 2003 SP3 can be installed successfully. In this scenario, the following test results appear in the Test Result for Sitecode dialog box:

Additionally, if you click View Report in this dialog box, the SITECODE_Report.xml file appears. The following error information is logged in this file:

You experience this problem if the SMS 2003 site server database is hosted in Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the SMS 2003 Deployment Readiness Wizard queries the SQL Server 2005 master database for the spt_server_info attribute. However, this attribute is not contained in the SQL Server 2005 master database. Therefore, the query is unsuccessful. Therefore, the SMS 2003 Deployment Readiness Wizard incorrectly determines that the database is earlier than SQL Server 7.0 SP3.

WORKAROUND

No action is needed to work around this problem. The error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section does not prevent the installation of SMS 2003 SP3. The following SQL Server installations are supported for use with SMS 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and with SMS 2003 SP3:
  • The release version of SQL Server 2005
  • SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
