SYMPTOMS

When you start a Windows Vista-based computer that has a USB camera connected, the computer may stop responding. This problem may also occur when you perform an unattended installation of Windows Vista on a computer that has a USB camera connected. This problem occurs if the camera uses the Stream.sys driver.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

To verify that the system uses the Stream.sys driver, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start

    , type verifier in the Start Search box, and then click verifier.exe in the Programs list.

     User Account Control permission
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
  2. Click Display information about the currently verified drivers, and then click Next.
  3. Click Add, type Stream.sys in the File name box, and then click Open.

    Examine the status of the Stream.sys driver.
    • The system uses the Stream.sys driver if Loaded is listed in the Status column.
    • The system does not use the Stream.sys driver if Never Loaded is listed in the Status column.
  4. Click Stream.sys, and then click Remove.
  5. Click Cancel.
