SYMPTOMS

Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 cannot find some network devices by using the network device discovery process. Therefore, you cannot manage these network devices in Operations Manager 2007.

This problem occurs even though the network devices respond to the "GET" packets that the Snmputil.exe tool sends.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Operations Manager 2007 supports only version 2 of the SNMP protocol (SNMPv2). Devices that do not support SNMPv2 ignore the "GET" packets that Operations Manager sends. Therefore, the network device discovery process cannot detect these devices. For example, this situation occurs when the devices support only version 1 of the SNMP protocol (SNMPv1) or version 3 of the SNMP protocol (SNMPv3).

The Snmputil.exe tool uses both SNMPv1 and SNMPv2. These devices respond to the "GET" packets that the Snmputil.exe tool sends even if the devices support only SNMPv1.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the following hotfix. To do this, follow the steps in the "Hotfix installation instructions" section.

After you apply this hotfix, a new Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Community version list appears in the network device discovery wizard. This list contains an SNMP v1 item and an SNMP v2 item. If you select SNMP v1 from the list, the network device discovery wizard uses SNMPv1 to detect network devices.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support
Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

Hotfix installation instructions

You must apply this hotfix to all management servers that are running Operations Manager 2007. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Copy the SystemCenterOperationsManager2007-RTM-KB939364-X86-AMD64-ENU.MSI file from the hotfix package to a local folder or to a shared folder.
  2. Run the SystemCenterOperationsManager2007-RTM-KB939364-X86-AMD64-ENU.MSI file.

Note You can run this file either in Windows Explorer or at a command prompt. The hotfix installation process restarts the OpsMgr Health Service.
  3. Locate the hotfix utility folder for the hotfix. By default, the folder has the following path:
    %ProgramFiles%\System Center Operations Manager 2007 Hotfix Utility\Q939364
  4. Import the following management packs from the hotfix utility folder:
    • System.Snmp.Library.mp
    • System.Performance.Libarary.mp
    • Microsoft.SystemCenter.NetworkDevice.Library.mp
    • Microsoft.SystemCenter.Internal.UI.Tasks.mp
    • Microsoft.SystemCenter.RuleTemplates.mp
Note You must import these management packs in the order in which they appear here. If you have already imported these management packs in an incorrect order, you must remove the management packs and then re-import them in the correct order.
The computers are automatically updated. You must approve the update in the Pending Management folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the computer that is running the Management Server role, click Start, point to All Programs, point to System Center Operations Manager 2007, and then click Operations Console.
  2. Select the Administration view, expand Administration, expand Device Management, and then click Pending Management.
  3. In the Pending Management folder, review and approve the agent computers to apply this hotfix.

Note If you install Operations Manager 2007 Agent on some computers after this hotfix is applied, make sure that you approve the installation in the Pending Management folder.
