FIX: The operation takes a long time to finish when you rename a control by using the Properties window in Visual Studio 2005

In Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, you rename a control by using the Properties window in the designer. When you do this, the operation takes a long time to finish.

This problem is most likely to occur if the following conditions are true:

• The project is large and complex.
• The control name appears frequently in the code.

This problem occurs because Visual Studio 2005 uses a process that is called the rename-refactor process to rename all the occurrences of the selected token throughout the whole project. When you rename a control in the designer, the rename-refactor process may take a long time to finish.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

After you apply this hotfix, you can turn off the rename-refactor process in Visual Studio 2005 to obtain better performance when you rename a control. However, you must manually rename the references to the control after you rename the control. You must do this because the references to the control are not automatically renamed by the rename-refactor process.
