SYMPTOMS

If Windows Mail is set as the default e-mail client on a computer that is running Windows Vista, the MAPI_E_FAILURE error code is generated when you run an application that calls the MAPIFindNext function.

Note This function retrieves the next message identifier or the first message identifier of a specified type of incoming message.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a Windows Mail API function instead of a simple MAPI function on a Windows Vista-based computer that uses Windows Mail as the default e-mail client.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

  1. Click Start, and then click Default Programs.
  2. Click Set your default programs.
  3. In the Programs list, click Windows Mail, click Set this program as default, and then click OK.
