SYMPTOMS

You install the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. When you start Microsoft Office Excel, you experience one of the following symptoms:
  • The PerformancePoint tab does not appear on the Ribbon in Microsoft Office Excel 2007.
  • The PerformancePoint menu does not appear in Microsoft Office Excel 2003.

CAUSE

This problem occurs for one of the following reasons.

Cause 1

The PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel is not enabled in Excel.

Cause 2

The installation of the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel was not completed successfully.

Cause 3

You start Excel in safe mode.

Cause 4

You start Excel in embedded mode.

Cause 5

After you install the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel, a component of Microsoft Office 2000 or of an earlier version of Microsoft Office is installed. The component may be installed by other applications.

WORKAROUND

Workaround for Cause 1

To work around this problem, enable the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. To do this, follow the steps that are appropriate for the version of Excel that you are using.

Excel 2007

  1. Start Excel 2007.
  2. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
  3. In the Excel Options dialog box, click Trust Center, and then click Trust Center Settings.
  4. In the Trust Center dialog box, click Add-ins.
  5. On the Add-ins page, click to clear the Disable all Application Add-ins (may impair functionality) check box, and then click OK.
  6. Click the Add-Ins tab.
  7. On the View and manage Microsoft Office add-ins page, click COM Add-ins in the Manage list, and then click Go.
  8. In the COM Add-Ins dialog box, click to select the Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 Add-In for Excel check box under Add-Ins available, and then click OK.
  9. Restart Excel 2007.

Excel 2003

  1. Start Excel 2003.
  2. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Office Excel.
  3. In the About Microsoft Excel dialog box, click Disabled Items.
  4. In the Disabled Items dialog box, click Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 Add-In for Excel, and then click Enable.
  5. Restart Excel 2003.

Workaround for Cause 2

To work around this problem, repair the existing installation of the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel.

In Windows Vista, you can repair the existing installation of the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel by using the Uninstall or change a program item in Control Panel.

In Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP, you can repair the existing installation of the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel.

Workaround for Cause 3

To work around this problem, restart Excel without using the /s option or the /safe option.

Workaround for Cause 4

To work around this problem, restart Excel without using the /e option or the /embedded option.

Workaround for Cause 5

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Note Use Method 1 if you know which application causes the problem. Use Method 2 or Method 3 if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You cannot determine which application causes the problem.
  • Method 1 does not work around the problem.

Method 1

Uninstall the application that installed the component of Office 2000 or the component of an earlier version of Office.

Method 2

If you use Excel 2007, uninstall Excel 2007. Then, reinstall Excel 2007.

If you use Excel 2003, uninstall Excel 2003. Then, reinstall Excel 2003.

Method 3

Repair the existing installation of Excel.

In Windows Vista, you can repair the existing installation of Excel by using the Uninstall or change a program item in Control Panel.

In Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP, you can repair the existing installation of Excel by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

If you use the /safe option or the /s option to start Excel, Excel starts in safe mode.

When you start Excel in safe mode, Excel bypasses all files that are stored in the startup folders. For example, Excel bypasses the Xlstart folder and the alternative startup file folder that you specify.

Note In Excel 2007, you specify the alternative startup file folder on the Advanced page in the Excel Options dialog box. In Excel 2003, you specify the alternative startup file folder on the General tab in the Options dialog box.

If you use the /embedded option or the /e option to start Excel, Excel starts in embedded mode.

How to determine Cause 1

  1. In Excel 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
  2. In the Excel Options dialog box, click Add-Ins.
  3. On the Add-Ins page, verify that Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 Add-In for Excel appears under Inactive Application Add-ins.

How to determine Cause 2

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007, and then click Planning Configuration Settings.
  2. In the Configure PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel dialog box, click the Diagnostics tab.
  3. On the Diagnostics tab, click Run Diagnostics to run the diagnostic test.
If the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel was not installed successfully, the diagnostic test should fail.

If the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel was installed successfully, the diagnostic test returns a result that resembles the following:

How to determine Cause 3

If you start Excel in safe mode, the title of the active Excel window ends with the following text:
Microsoft Excel (Safe Mode)

How to determine Cause 4

If you start Excel in embedded mode, a new, blank workbook does not open in Excel. Additionally, most commands on the Ribbon are unavailable.

How to determine Cause 5

Use the method that is described in the "How to determine Cause 2" section. The result that the diagnostic test returns may help you determine which application causes the problem. If you cannot determine which application causes the problem, use Method 2 or Method 3 in the "Workaround for Cause 5" section.
