Error message when you press F9 to send and to receive e-mail messages in Outlook 2003: "TASK 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x8004010F)"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, you use Cached Exchange Mode.
  • You use the DownloadOAB registry value to prevent the automatic download of the offline address book (OAB).
  • You press F9 to send and to receive e-mail messages in all Outlook accounts.
In this scenario, Outlook unexpectedly tries to download the OAB. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
TASK 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x8004010F) : "The operation failed. An object could not be found."

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the following hotfix.

Note You must also disable the option to download the OAB before you press F9.

How to obtain the hotfix

How to disable the option to download the OAB

  1. On the Outlook Tools menu, point to Send/Receive, point to Send/Receive Settings, and then click Define Send/Receive Groups.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Click to clear the Download offline address book check box, and then click OK.
  4. Click Close to close the Send/Receive Groups dialog box.
  5. Press F9 to send and to receive e-mail messages in all Outlook accounts.
