Office SharePoint Server Search and Windows SharePoint Server Search may not work as expected after you update Office SharePoint Server 2007 Search

SYMPTOMS

After you update Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Search, Office SharePoint Server Search and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Server Search may not work as expected.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when the following conditions are true:
  • The Search service accounts in SharePoint Server 2007 and in Windows SharePoint Services are not members of the Local Administrators group.
  • The Search service accounts in SharePoint Server 2007 and in Windows SharePoint Services are not members of the WSS_ADMIN_WPG Windows security group.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually start the search service on each computer that is running an instance of the online search service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On a computer that is running SharePoint Server 2007 or Windows SharePoint Services, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type stsadm -o osearch -action list. Note the list of computers that is returned.
  3. Log on to a computer that is included in the list that was returned in step 2.

    Note You can log on to the computer locally or through a remote connection.
  4. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  5. At the command prompt, type stsadm -o osearch -action start.
  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each computer that is included in the list that was returned in step 2.
  7. On a computer that is running SharePoint Server 2007 or Windows SharePoint Services, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  8. At the command prompt, type stsadm -o spsearch -action list. Note the list of computers that is returned.
  9. Log on to a computer in the list that is included in the list that was returned in step 8.

    Note You can log on to the computer locally or through a remote connection.
  10. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  11. At the command prompt, type stsadm -o spsearch -action start.
  12. Repeat steps 9 through 11 for each computer that is included in the list that was returned in step 8.

MORE INFORMATION

The problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section can also occur if you repair SharePoint Server 2007. When this problem occurs, the Windows SharePoint Services index and crawl operations do not work as expected.
