Error message after you enable the ETW trace log on a computer that is running Windows XP: "0x0000007E (0xC0000005, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4 ) SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP, you may receive the following Stop error message after you enable the Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) trace log for an application:

0x0000007E (0xC0000005, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

The problem does not occur if the same application runs on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003.

Notes

The four parameters in the Stop error message vary depending on the computer's configuration. However, the first parameter is always 0xC0000005.
Not all "Stop 0x0000007E" error messages are caused by this problem.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Event Tracing for Windows does not correctly manage its allocated buffer. Therefore, the operating system accesses an invalid memory space.
