SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Service Pack 3 or System Center Configuration Manager 2007, the Client Configuration Manager may return incorrect error codes when a remote client computer is unreachable. The Client Configuration Manager returns error code 5 instead of error code 53.

Note Error code 5 indicates that access is denied. Error code 53 indicates that the network path is not found.

For example, when the remote client computer is shut down, the Ccm.log file may include information that resembles the following:
ERROR: Connected to <Client_computer_name> registry, but couldn't connect to the \\<Client_computer_name>\admin$ share using account ''
ERROR: Unable to access target machine for request: <Request_name>, machine name: <Client_computer_name>, error code: 5

RESOLUTION

After you install this hotfix or the required service pack, the Client Configuration Manager returns the correct error code. The Client Configuration Manager returns error code 53 if a remote client computer is unreachable. It returns error code 5 if the remote client computer is reachable but the Client Configuration Manager does not have sufficient permission to access the shared folder.
